Collecting and Using Student Materials

Often when teaching a course you may wish to save exemplar papers from a student or students in your course. To use student materials in future courses or as part of your teaching portfolio, you will need permission from the student.

How to choose student examples

When you are using materials in a job portfolio or for teaching future courses, you need to think about the rhetorical purpose behind the choices you are making. You shouldn't simply grab the papers that look great to you. Think about what the paper demonstrates and how it helps others understand your assignments, your pedagogical approach, and your classroom goals.

Using the materials in research is entirely different and must go through the Institutional Review Board for approval before any collection can take place.

Getting student permission

If you are looking to use student materials in the future, you may adapt the text below into a handout for your students:

You may, of course, withhold consent, but should you grant it, rest assured that your confidentiality will be maintained at all times.
