Collecting and Using Student Materials

Often when teaching a course you may wish to save exemplar papers from a student or students in your course. To use student materials in future courses or as part of your teaching portfolio, you will need permission from the student.

How to choose student examples

When you are using materials in a job portfolio or for teaching future courses, you need to think about the rhetorical purpose behind the choices you are making. You shouldn't simply grab the papers that look great to you. Think about what the paper demonstrates and how it helps others understand your assignments, your pedagogical approach, and your classroom goals.

Using the materials in research is entirely different and must go through the Institutional Review Board for approval before any collection can take place.

Getting student permission

If you are looking to use student materials in the future, you may adapt the text below into a handout for your students:

All student work produced in [course] may be useful in the assessment of effective teaching practices and writing tasks. By consenting to the instructional use of the material produced in this course, you, the student identified above, acknowledge that the aim of this consent is to enhance the course for the sake of future students and that granting this consent will have no impact on your performance in the course. You may, of course, withhold consent, but should you grant it, rest assured that your confidentiality will be maintained at all times.

To confirm your understanding of how your writing may be used, please initial below. _ My work may be used as an example of student writing in other writing courses. _ My work may be used as an example of student writing in the training of instructors. _ My work may NOT be used for any instructional purposes. _ My work may be used as an example in materials for a job application.

If my writing will be used in any of the capacities I have approved, I request that: _ My name be left on my writing. _ An alias be assigned to my writing.

By signing below I acknowledge I have read and understand the above conditions for the use of my writing. I also acknowledge that I am aware of the University's Academic Honesty Policy, as stated in the student handbook, and that all work I submit for the course will abide by said policy.
